Acura has had history of building performance-oriented vehicles that could never quite stack up against the established German competition. However with the TLX Acura is throwing everything it knows into the ring. The Acura TLX was built to replace the larger TL and smaller TSX sedans in order to build a vehicle aligned more with the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4.
Looking at the exterior it’s easy to see the amount of work Acura put into the TLX to make it aesthetically competitive. The standard Acura Jewel Eye LED Headlights that add a sporty, expensive look for a vehicle you wouldn’t expect with a starting price of $31,000. The TLX comes standard with a 206-hp engine partnered with an 8-speed transmission. For those looking for a little extra, the SH-AWD model with it’s 310-hp and sport-handling all-wheel drive system will be sure to make driving fun again. It is also important to point out that with 310-hp and Acura’s SH-AWD system the TLX is beginning to look a lot like the Audi S4, a vehicle with a starting price $10K higher. The SH-AWD model also features a 9-speed transmission which although might sound like too many gears does return impressive economy figures. The transmission also sports multiple driving modes ranging from “Econ” to an aggressive “Sport +” mode which sharpens throttle response and holds gears until higher up in the rev range.
However it might be the interior where the TLX really shines. The interior is a tech-lovers dream featuring a number of entertainment and driver information screens and a unique gear selector that frees up more room than you would expect inside the cabin. Overall the TLX feels of a higher quality than its German counterparts due to the use of better materials and an exceptional job of masking any plastic that might be in the cabin.
Although vehicles such as the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and Mercedes C-Class are usually the first considered when you’re looking into breaking into the entry-luxury segment it’s clear the TLX is now in a strong position to take on the best of the Germans. What’s the next step? Hey Acura, care to take on the BMW M3?
