Marek Reichman. Most likely not a name you are familiar with however it’s time to fix that. Mr. Reichman is the Chief Creative Officer for Aston Martin and the designer of the very new and very gorgeous Aston Martin DB11. Debuting as one of Aston Martin’s most radical redesigns since 2003, the DB11 is a look into what Aston Martin has in store for their entire lineup in the future. The DB11 is most characterized by the new shark-nose front end that incorporates a revised, narrower grille, a vented, sculpted hood, and Aston Martin’s new “AeroBlade™“ design that acts as a virtual spoiler while not interrupting the flowing lines of the DB11. The unique blade-inspired taillights distinctly characterize the rear end of the vehicle.
Powering the all-new DB11 is an also all-new 5.2L V12 sending 600-hp and 516 ft/lbs of torque to the rear wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. This all-new V12 engine is capable of quick changes in engine speed thanks to its small displacement (remember the Lamborghini’s Huracan’s V10 is also 5.2L) and other modern engine technologies. This amazing power plant sends the DB11 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and on to a top speed just above the 200 mph mark. A breath of fresh air is the natural exhaust note that is unaided by any “synthesized” engine note through the speakers (we’d imagine the lovely V12 doesn’t really need much help in that department). Ensuring the DB11 is the perfect GT for everyday driving is the dedicated “GT mode” that tones down the exhaust note, enables gear changes at lower RPMs, allows the activation of a cylinder deactivation setting, and even allows the “quiet start” mode so you don’t wake the neighbors whenever you start up your DB11.
Completing the DB11’s transformation is the new beautifully crafted interior with the 12-inch driver information display acting as the centerpiece. A central tachometer flanked by two smaller information displays gives the driver complete control of the DB11’s systems. The long-aging infotainment screen has finally been replaced with an all-new 8-inch unit controlled by a rotary dial that strongly resembles those of current Mercedes models. Expect to see this continue, as the DB11 is the first vehicle to benefit from Aston Martin and Mercedes’s new partnership. Although a lot has changed within the DB11’s interior, it is still very much Aston Martin retaining the familiar “P, R, N, D, and ignition buttons high up on the dashboard along with only the highest quality leather appointed throughout the cabin.
The DB11 marks a new chapter for Aston Martin. An all new exterior design, power plant, and interior add up to a super coupe that will certainly lead the current pack of ground tourers. We certainly look forward to seeing how Mr. Reichman continues to evolve the rest of Aston Martin’s future lineup. The Aston Martin DB11 competes against the Bentley Continental GT, Ferrari California T, and the Mercedes S65 AMG Coupe.
