The Audi A3 e-tron is a vehicle that surprised many when it made it’s way to U.S. shores. Although there are other plug-in hybrids and EVs on the market currently, they consistently seem to have to compromise refinement or performance in order to provide the efficiency claims made by their manufacturers. As Audi’s first production plug-in hybrid, the e-tron delivers the efficiency you expect without compromising performance, practicality, or technological advancement. Most characterized by its Sportback design, the A3 e-tron’s design is not typical of your average hybrid. Available in the usual Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige trim levels, every e-tron features LED technology taillights as well as Audi’s signature Singleframe® grille. Full LED headlights are available on Premium Plus and Prestige models.
The Audi A3 e-tron is equipped with both conventional internal combustion engine and an electric motor that work in sync to propel the e-tron in a number of driving modes. The e-tron will always start in EV mode that allows the vehicle to be driven on electric power alone for up to 17 miles- then the combustion engine will turn on. The other hybrid modes allow for standard hybrid driving, a mode to sustain the current charge level, and finally a mode that focuses on increasing the charge of the battery. Aside from the four EV and hybrid modes, the Audi A3 e-tron also incorporates a “Boost” mode that utilizes both the electric motor and 1.4L engine to provide maximum power output for passing or for entering a highway. To make sure you can keep track of the various hybrid modes and your battery charge level, the A3 e-tron’s typical tachometer has been replaced by a meter that displays your charge level and the amount of power you are currently using.
Of course the level of technology and refinement inside the A3 e-tron is second to none. Fine leather seating comes as standard as does twelve-way power adjustment. A number of different infotainment systems are also available including one featuring Audi music interface, SiriusXM® Satellite Radio, and even a navigation system utilizing Google™ Map technology. A large panoramic roof comes as standard.
The A3 e-tron represents a new direction for Audi. Although it may be Audi’s first plug-in hybrid, you can be sure it won’t be their last. As a first attempt at such a vehicle we think it’s safe to say they’ve done quite a good job. The Audi A3 e-tron competes against the BMW i3, Lexus CT, and Toyota Prius.
