Ever since its introduction in 2005, the R8 has managed to completely change what people think of Audi. Now in its second generation, the Audi R8 has been designed to be the perfect all-round supercar. Sharing the same carbon-aluminum chassis as the Lamborghini Huracan, the R8 is lighter and stiffer than the previous generation. The exterior has been totally redesigned while staying true to the successful R8 formula. Gone is the massive side intake in favor of two smaller ones feeding cool air to the engine and transmission. The front fascia has been redesigned to be more aerodynamic and incorporates the latest generation of Audi’s famous LED matrix highlights.
The standard Audi R8 comes standard with a Lamborghini derived 5.2L V10 sending 540-hp to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Sadly the manual transmission has gone the way of the dinosaurs for Audi however if you are looking for some extra excitement from your R8 and are willing to spend the extra $25,000 then you can opt for the V10 Plus model. The Audi R8 V10 Plus has the same 5.2L V10 as the standard model but instead produces 610-hp and is loaded with carbon fiber inside and out. Carbon ceramic brakes come standard on the V10 Plus model as well giving you strong stopping power on the road or racetrack. Audi’s drive select system is standard on the R8 and can change vehicle settings to optimize it for street or track use.
The driver’s seat of the R8 is truly cockpit-like. The flat-bottom steering wheel gives quick access to media and vehicle systems while also having a number of other satellite buttons controlling systems such as the exhaust and the Audi Drive Select system. Audi’s new “Virtual cockpit” uses a full digital display that is also configurable to let you have the just information you want on display. A new variant of Audi’s MMI system integrates the familiar central dial flanked by other control buttons but also incorporates a touchpad built into the dial itself for easier use. The R8’s seats are well bolstered and supportive yet comfortable enough to drive in everyday. Fine Nappa leather is laid out throughout the cabin and can be optioned for the seats as well in a beautiful diamond pattern.
The Audi R8’s return turns up the heat on its rivals by having the perfect mix of everyday refinement and V10 powered lunacy. The previous generation Audi R8 was a wild success and with the upgrades Audi has made to this new generation you can be sure this current generation will only be better. The Audi R8 competes against the Porsche 911, Mercedes AMG GT S, and Nissan GT-R.
