Containing a perfect blend of luxury and off-road performance, the BMW X5 is perfect for those looking to have a fun off the beaten path but still want a comfortable ride on the way home. Having been facelifted for 2014, the X5 features cleaner lines and an overall more elegant look than the pre-2014 models.
The X5 features four different engine options including a diesel and hybrid powertrains. The standard sDrive35i model utilizes BMW’s familiar 3.0L straight six producing 300-hp and 300 lb/ft of torque. Rear-wheel drive is also standard on the sDrive35i model while all-wheel drive is standard on all other models noted by the name “xDrive” before the engine name. The xDrive50i model features a 4.4L V8 producing 445-hp and 480 lb/ft. The xDrive40e features a hybrid powertrain incorporating a small 2.0L inline four motor with an electric motor for a combined output of 308-hp and 332 lb/ft and impressive fuel economy of 23-city and 31-highway mpg. The 3.0L diesel in the xDrive35d produces 255-hp and 413 lb/ft of torque. Keeping the wheels safely on the ground are a number of standard and optional systems such as BMW’s traction control system called “Dynamic Performance Control”, Active Roll Stabilization to keep the vehicle level when cornering, and Dynamic Damper Control featuring active dampeners that adjust to give you a more comfortable ride when needed. These systems also allow the vehicle to be taken off-road by lifting the ride height to avoid rocks and other obstacles.
The BMW X5’s interior is refined and luxurious. The instrument cluster integrates a standard gauge set with a digital readout underneath allowing the driver to see a number of vehicle diagnostics while on the fly. The placement of buttons is exactly where you would expect them following BMW’s traditional layout. The standard X5’s seats are firm yet supportive but we would option for the 20-way multicontour seating also featuring fine Nappa leather. BMW’s next generation iDrive system features an easier to use turn dial incorporating a touchpad, 10.2-inch center display, and an optional surround camera system allows you to see all road you- useful when parking or especially off-road. The BMW X5 competes against the Audi Q7, Land Rover Range Rover Sport, and Mercedes GLS-Class.
