The Bugatti Chiron has been a long time coming. Nearly two years ago we learned it’s name. Only a year ago we got a taste of what it might look like after the debut of the Vision Gran Turismo Concept. And finally on lead day we learned what it would truly become. But how does a company improve on a vehicle that just tore up the rulebook? It does so by delivering truly unbelievable power figures. Let’s get to them.
1,479-hp. 1,180 lb/ft of torque. Less than 2.5 seconds to 60 mph. 261 mph flat out. There. Now to the details. The Chiron’s body is best described as an evolution of the Veyrons being heavily inspired by both the Veyron and Vision Gran Turismo concept. The Chiron’s body is littered with intakes and scoops to breathe in an incredible 60,000 liters of air every minute at full speed. Speaking of speed lets get to the engine.
A quad-turbo 8.0L W16 engine powers the Chiron. Although that may sound identical to the Veyron, the engine has been totally reworked to allow for better cooling with the water pump capable of pumping a massive 800 liters of water every minute. This new workover has resulted in the Chiron producing 1,180 lb/ft of torque though 2000-6000 rpm. Impressive to say the least. The Chiron uses a bespoke seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox to put the power down to the road, anything less and the transmission would most likely be torn apart. Acceleration is remarkable with the new Bugatti sprinting to 60 mph in less than 2.5 seconds, 0-124 mph in under 6.5 seconds, and 0-186 mph in less than 13.5 seconds. Top speed is rated at 261 mph however when the Chiron is in it’s “Handling” mode top speed is limited to 236 mph.
As you would imagine the interior of the Chiron is second to none. Only the finest materials were used in the construction of the cabin only seeing carbon fiber, fine leather, and polished metals. If you look at the cabin from the side, you’ll clearly see the “C” character line from the exterior also visible from the inside. The cluster gauge is a beautiful mix tradition and future utilizing a central tachometer flanked by two high-definition screens one giving a multitude of driver information and the other incorporating the navigation and multimedia controls. The temperature controls are arranged in a stacked dial pattern tying the whole interior together beautifully.
The Bugatti Chiron will be limited to 500 units with each one selling for no less than $2.5 million dollars. Remember, although the Chiron packs nearly 1,500-hp and can accelerate like a bat out of hell, it was also designed to be used everyday, with the kind of dependability you’d expect from your everyday family sedan. Just like it’s Veyron father, it is a safe bet that the Chiron will go down as one of the most impressive and best engineered vehicles of it’s time. The Bugatti Chiron competes against the Ferrari LaFerrari, Koenigsegg Regera, and McLaren P1.
