Fiat surprised the world when they said their iconic Spider would make its return. Many worried that the new Spider would be too soft or not deliver the true “open-top roadster” feeling needed in a car like this. Although based on the Mazda MX-5 Miata, the 124 Spider has been totally reworked with true classic Fiat styling. Shown as an evolution of Fiat’s design language, the 124 Spider features an updated hexagonal grille, LED headlights, and even the twin hood humps inspired by the original 124 Spider from the 1960’s. The soft convertible top incorporates a glass rear window to improve visibility and decrease interior noise.
The Fiat 124 Spider is powered by a small turbocharged 1.4L MULTIAIR® engine. Although that engine might not sound too impressive, it does send 160-hp and 184 lb/ft of torque to the rear wheels which sounds very good indeed. Even better, the 124 Spider is fitted as standard with a six-speed manual although a six-speed automatic is available. Thanks to the low curb weight of 2,400lbs, the little roadster can accelerate to sixty mph in just six seconds. The front double wishbone and rear multilink suspension keeps the 124 Spider firmly planted in the corners so you can focus on the pleasure of driving. 16-inch wheels come as standard however larger 17-inch wheels are also available.
An area where Fiat has the Mazda MX-5 beat however is the interior. The two interiors look very similar however the 124 Spider utilizes finer materials. The seats have been sculpted to include heavier bolstering, unique stitching patterns, and optional leather upholstery. A new Mazda-Fiat infotainment system has been fitted and includes a 7-inch full color display, full radio/mp3 capabilities, USB and SD interfaces, and GPS navigation all controlled via the central Multimedia Control Knob.
The Fiat 124 Spider is a perfect recreation of the classic spiders from the 1960’s bringing to the market a perfect combination of timeless styling and modern handling. With the roof down the 124 Spider is guaranteed to be one of the best driving experiences under $30,000. The Fiat 124 Spider competes with the Audi TT, BMW Z4 Roadster, and the Mazda MX-5 Miata.
