Koenigsegg is a brand many believed would not succeed. No motorsport pedigree, no crazy German engineering, and they aren’t even Italian! And yet through all this Koenigsegg has proved time and again that they are a force to be reckoned with. The CCX and Agera were true brutes packing 1,000+ horsepower into lightweight, carbon fiber bodies and yet that was simply not enough for Koenigsegg founder Christian von Koenigsegg. Enter the latest monster to leave the Koenigsegg workshop- the Regera. Translating into Swedish “to Reign”, the Regera certainly lives up to its name. Although packing one of the most complex and powerful powerplants on the market today, the Regera features a surprisingly elegant and tasteful design. There’s no crazy wings or exhaust pipes coming from just behind the driver’s head. Instead the Regera features smooth carbon fiber bodywork giving the impression that the Swedes are just as good as the Italians when it comes to design. One of the key aerodynamic features of the Regera is it’s top mounted adjustable rear wing which is the first in the industry to have the ability to fold entirely flat giving the hypercar a smooth, sleek appearance. A beautiful added touch to the Regera are the constellation daytime running lights that can be configured in any constellation pattern so desired by the owner to make their vehicle truly unique.
Although Koenigsegg could have kept up with its philosophy of packing simply insane amounts of power inside its vehicles, the Swedish car builder decided to tackle what we are now seeing McLaren, Ferrari, and Porsche do- combining high-performance engines with hybrid technology. The Regera features a twin-turbo 5.0L V8 producing 1,100-hp alongside a stunning 700-hp worth of electric motor propulsion. Although combined powertrain output is 1,800-hp, when the power and torque curves line up the combined output of the Regera is an incredible 1,500-hp and 1,475 lb/ft of torque. That insane amount of power means the Regera can sprint to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds and will climb to an astounding 250 mph in less than 20 seconds. Oh and it can travel on electric power alone as well. The Regera is a plug-in hybrid with the plug concealed nicely in the rear of the vehicle. Just like a Prius then right? Oh and see that central exhaust outlet? Well it’s not really an exhaust but rather just an outlet for all the radiant heat coming from the battery’s heat exchangers. The exhausts are actually built into the fins in the diffuser and were specially designed by exhaust experts Akrapovic.
Because of how speed-focused the Regera is, you might expect the inside to be as barren as some racecars but you couldn’t be more wrong. The Regera’s interior is a masterpiece filled with soft leather, technology, and of course glossy carbon fiber. Gone is the familiar cluster gauge and instead in its place you’ll find a LCD screen giving you al the information you might need. A large 9-inch infotainment system features navigational controls, 3G and WiFi connectivity, Apple CarPlay® and a number of vehicle diagnostic systems. Of course to protect the vehicle a number of cameras are located around the vehicle and can be activated at any time. Even the Dihedral Synchro helix Doors (yes that is what you call them) have sensors in them that will stop before possibly hitting a curb. Koenigsegg truly thought of everything.
The Koenigsegg Regera promises to be one of the most exciting and advanced vehicles in the world. But what does it take to get your hands on a Regera? Well for one you better have $1.9 million you’re willing to burn through. On top of that staggering number Koenigsegg is only planning on building 80 Regeras so if you have the money act quickly. The Koenigsegg Regera competes against other hypercars such as the McLaren P1, Ferrari LaFerrari, and the Porsche 918 Spyder.
