The world really didn’t know how to react when Land Rover debuted the Range Rover Evoque back in 2008. Land Rover touted the Evoque’s design input by Victoria Beckham of the Spice Girls but even then it seemed many were left on the fence. However in it’s first year on sale (2011) the Evoque managed a record 88,000 units, making it one of the most successful Land Rover units to date. The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is probably the most unique vehicle in Land Rover’s lineup. The Evoque comes with your choice of two body styles- a two door or standard four door. To avoid confusion, we should let you know that Land Rover describes these bodystyles as “three- or five-doors” rather than just go by the number of passenger doors.
The sole powertrain for the Evoque is a 2.0L inline four engine sending power to a nine- (yes, nine) speed transmission. The standard model sends power to the rear wheels however 4WD is optional and recommended- it is a Land Rover after all. Although small, that 2.0L motor produces 240-hp and 250 lb/ft of torque sending the Evoque to 60-mph in 7.1 seconds. The upside to such a small engine is greater fuel economy in the form of the impressive 21-city/ 30-highway mpg in the Evoque Coupe SE Premium. Although the Range Rover Evoque is the smallest vehicle in the Land Rover lineup standing at just over five feet tall, don’t discount its off-road abilities. The Evoque utilizes a sophisticated 4WD system that enables it to keep traction on even the most unsuitable surfaces. The little Rangie is even capable of wading waters to a depth of twenty inches and a front approach angle of 25 degrees.
The Range Rover Evoque features a comfortable interior suitable for everyday driving to the shops or on the farm. 12-way perforated leather seating keeps all passengers comfortable while the easy-to-read instrument cluster puts little strain on the driver. There are a number of driver assistance packages available which include technologies such as park assist, traffic sign recognition, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and even a head-up display system all in the name of a more enjoyable and luxurious journey. Although the Evoque looks small, Land Rover did an excellent job utilizing interior space meaning up to five occupants stay comfortable at all times. The only knock against the Evoque would be the narrow rear window somewhat limiting rear visibility.
Although the Range Rover Evoque may be the smallest in the Land Rover lineup, underestimating it wouldn’t be the smart move. This little Rangie has more than proven itself to be a fully capable Land Rover like the rest of them and the high sales numbers certainly reflect that statement. The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque competes against the Audi Q5, BMW X4, and Mercedes GLC-Class.
