Maserati has always been known for making beautiful grand touring cars ranging from the stunning 1959 Tipo 61 (also known as the Birdcage) to the current range of Gran Tourismos. 2017 marks Maserati stepping into a whole new ball game by creating their first SUV in the form of the brand new Levante. Although an SUV, the Levante shares numerous Maserati design traits including the signature grille design, narrow headlights and taillights, three section air vents in the front quarter panels, and low, quad-set exhaust pipes. Overall the Levante has a clean, sophisticated look while retaining the sporting characteristics expected in a Maserati.
The Levante is powered by two versions of a twin-turbocharged V6. The standard Levante produces 345-hp and 369 lb/ft of torque while the Levante S model produces 424-hp and 428 lb/ft of torque. Regardless of which model you choose, the Levante is fitted standard with Maserati’s Q4 sports AWD system as well as an air suspension system combining the perfect mix of sport and luxury. The Levante is capable of accelerating to sixty miles per hour in as little as five seconds flat and (even for an SUV) is perfectly suited to hard cornering thanks to it’s Torque Vectoring differentials and perfect 50/50 weight distribution. All Levantes feature an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission as well as a drive select system to which the driver can change between Normal, Comfort, Sport, and Off-road modes.
The interior of the Levante is classic Maserati. The classic, three-spoke steering wheel, triton-marked instrument dials, and upper center-mounted clock constantly remind you that you are sitting in no ordinary SUV. Of course premium leather is fitted as standard throughout the vehicle however an extended leather package is available. A number of interior finishes are available including sleek carbon fiber inlays that convey a modern, sporting look to each occupant. Large aluminum shift paddles are located behind the steering wheel and stand out from the rest of the vehicle further showing off the sporting characteristics of the Levante. The sporty SUV features a “Maserati Touch Control” infotainment system with all controls located in the 8.4” touchscreen. The multimedia system includes on-board navigation, climate control, Apple® CarPlay or Aundroid Auto, and of course a full media system. A power liftgate operated by both inside and outside buttons as well as the key fob itself reveals the expansive luggage compartment with 19.4 cu ft of storage room.
The Levante is a fantastic first venture into the SUV market. Thanks to most SUVs being moneymakers for their respective companies, the Levante will no doubt be a great opportunity for Maserati and will allow them to continue venturing into new markets in the future. The Maserati Levante competes against the Audi Q7, BMW X5, and Porsche Cayenne.
