The Porsche Cayman has been with us since 2007 and has been a great success for Porsche. Now entering into it’s third generation, this perfectly balanced two-seater renamed the 718 Cayman as a nod to the open-cockpit racing car from the late 1950’s. This change also has the Cayman fall in line similarly with the fresh 718 Boxster. Along with the name change, the 718 Cayman (718 for short) receives subtle styling updates that draw inspiration from the recent 911 facelift. New LED accented headlights and full LED taillights add to redesign. A slight lip spoiler with an additional active pop-up spoiler completes the Cayman’s refresh.
Although the exterior has only received mild updates, mechanically the 718 is all new. An all-new 2.0L boxer four-cylinder is standard while a 2.5L boxer four-cylinder if found in the updated “S” Model. Although the familiar flat-six engines are gone, power has increased to 300-hp in the base model and 350-hp for the 718 Boxster S. Acceleration times are reflected in the power increases as the Boxster can reach 60mph in as little as four seconds flat. Keeping the driving purists happy, Porsche has decided to keep the manual transmission while the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is still an available option. A firm sports suspension is standard on both trims while an adaptive suspension is available (and recommended) with a number of settings ranging from a soft comfort setting to a track-ready sport+ setting.
The interior of the Cayman has changed little which in reality is actually a very good thing. The only change you might notice is the new steering wheel taken from Porsche’s 918 Spyder hybrid. A new multimedia system is also available featuring Apple® CarPlay, an updated navigation system, and even wireless Internet access. The seats are lined with fine leather or your choice of Alcantara and are well bolstered while still being comfortable for those longer drives with the top down.
The Porsche 718 Cayman will continue to be a best seller for the performance German marque that should be no surprise. With a nearly perfect weight distribution, two new powerful engine options, and of course that familiar perfect Porsche handling, the 718 Cayman is just about the perfect canyon cruiser. The Porsche 718 Cayman competes against the Audi TT Coupe, BMW Z4 Roadster, and Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.
