Ever since its launch in 1974, the Volkswagen Golf has been the definitive fun hatchback. Now in it’s seventh generation, the Golf has evolved to become nearly the perfect all-round vehicle. This current generation (called the Mk7) is the first to incorporate LED technology into the headlights and taillights. The new front fascia is more aerodynamic to increase efficiency. The Golf is available in both 2-Door and 4-Door body styles to suit you depending on if you need the extra space for passengers or cargo.
The Golf comes standard with an economical 1.8L engine with 170-hp and returning a very respectable 25mpg city and 37mpg highway. An all electric e-Golf with 115-hp is also available however we would suggest another trim due to its short range of only 85 miles before going flat. Those looking for a bit more excitement should aim for the Golf GTI with it’s 2.0L turbocharged engine and 210-hp. The Golf GTI is available with a performance package that gives the vehicle slightly heavier steering for a better driving feel and an additional 10-hp however those looking for the ultimate hot hatch experience should check out the Golf R. The R’s 2.0L engine is pumped up to 11 complete with 292-hp sending power to all four wheels through your choice of manual or dual-clutch automatic transmissions. Despite its $36K asking price we can’t imagine a more fun driving experience to go pick up groceries.
The Volkswagen Golf comes well equipped even at its base level. The twin cluster gauges flank a center information display giving you vehicle information right at a glance. A small touchscreen multimedia system comes standard but is upgradable to a much larger system complete with navigation and satellite radio. The standard cloth interior can be fitted with a unique plaid design for GTI models or a better leather interior giving some extra class to the German hatchback. The Volkswagen Golf completes against the Chevrolet Cruze, Kia Forte5 and Mazda3 Hatch.
