Volvo has lately been on a roll of making well designed and well engineered vehicles. The XC90 and S90 have been great successes for the Swedish automaker and Volvo aims to continue this trend with the new V90 and V90 Cross Country. Meant to replace the XC70, the new V90 takes many inspirational cues from the S90 it is based on including the signature “T Design” LED headlights, new vertical grille, and wraparound taillights. The V90’s creases in the body panels give a sense of extra length to the vehicle making the V90 look long and elegant. The raised trunk allow you to hold nearly anything you may need thanks to best in class interior volume. The Cross Country model calls for a raised suspension for better off-road handling and clearance (think Audi Allroad).
The Volvo V90 is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged and supercharged (yes, both) engine. This engine produces 316-hp and sends power to all four wheels. Keeping the ride comfortable no matter what the road throws your way is the rear air suspension system while the front conventional suspension perfectly communicates the road to the driver. The Volvo V90’s true highlight is in the multiple systems keeping you safe. The Pilot and Park Assist work using 360-degree sensors and cameras to do everything from keeping you safely in your lane to squeezing into a tight parallel parking spot. A “Large Animal Detection” system uses forward facing cameras to detect pedestrians, cyclists, and even large animals such as deer and will stop the vehicle if the driver cannot react fast enough. An Active High Beam system analyzes the road ahead and will keep your bright lights keeping the road ahead well illuminated while not shining into the car ahead of you keeping both vehicles safe.
Of course the V90’s interior has changed drastically from the outgoing XC70. The first thing you’ll notice is the large central infotainment screen containing all navigation, multimedia, telephone, and vehicle system controls. As with most luxury sedans coming out currently, the V90 features an all-digital instrument cluster that is configurable to perfectly suit the driver. Volvo’s new “CleanZone” system utilizes multiple size filters to keep the cabin free from any pollen and even harmful gases such as gasoline fumes. The V90’s seats themselves are nicely sculpted to keep the driver and passengers comfortable and well supported. The standard audio system features ten speakers delivering 330 watts although a premium Bower & Wilkins system featuring 19 speakers and 1400 watts is available.
The V90 might be the most impressive vehicle given to us by Volvo for some time now but more importantly it’s a brilliant look into what Volvo has in store for their future models. The Volvo V90 competes against the Audi Allroad, BMW 5 Series GT, and Mercedes E-Class Wagon.
