AutoChoose Car of the Day- 2018 Lexus LC500

Is Lexus Becoming Cool?

LC Banner
Shut up and take our money—this coupe is gorgeous. The Lexus LC 500 comes to us as a concept car disguised as a road car. The lines, inside and out are impeccable. It has supercar looks with a starting price just south of $100k. Its performance is satisfying enough while complimenting the looks without sacrificing comfort. This car turns heads so fast; a neck brace should be an available option.

The LC rides on the automaker’s GA-L (Global Architecture – Luxury) platform that will also underpin the new LS. The platform uses steel, aluminum and carbon fiber. Powering the LC500 is a 5.0-liter V8 making 471 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. No, this won’t put supercars in their place, but Lexus isn’t billing this as a supercar. It’s a luxury coupe, and that is evident in the performance. A sprint to 60 mph takes 4.4 seconds, which is probably due, in part, to the 4200-pound curb weight. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a smooth and quick 10-speed automatic transmission. A hybrid version is available.

The interior is nothing short of gorgeous. Suede and leather are everywhere. While the LC 500 is wrapped in luxury, it is still all Lexus, including the infotainment controls—including the sometimes-troublesome mouse pad. There are four seats, but the rears should be reserved for children who are heading to their cello practice.

It is hard not to compare the LC 500 to the LFA, even though the two play in completely different segments. Inside, the large digital tach looks straight out of the LFA. And the long, elegant lines on the back half of the LC look like they were pulled straight from the supercar. But the LC 500 isn’t a supercar. It’s a grand tourer with drop-dead gorgeous looks and a modestly hefty price tag.

LC500-03

Compared to the competition – BMW 650i and Mercedes-Benz S550 Coupe– the LC 500 is leaps and bounds ahead of them in terms of design and road presence, even if performance is comparatively less. If you were looking for a car that turns heads, we wouldn’t look further than the Lexus LC 500.
